OPTICAL ILLUSION • TRANSFORMATION • ANIMISM • EVERYDAY LIFE • ORIGAMI • FRAGILITY

Kenji Nakama’s artistic practice currently consists of two large bodies of work that develops in parallel, the first consists of a series of collages on white paper called Fold Studies. These works have a pictorial appearance, where the sensation of movement, the gesture of the brushstroke or the illusion of dragging the oil on a surface, become visual effects produced by the accumulation of white paper that they are activated by the gaze and movement of the viewer. The meticulous ordering proposed in the accumulation of sheets that make up these works reveal the nature physics, where the delicacy of the paper tends a fluid conversation between optical art, minimal and geometric, accompanied by the gestures of pictorial practice, terrain where the artist began his creative process.

The second set of works is called The Secret Life of Things which, according to the artist, is a way of revealing and elevating a unique formal quality inherent in the nature of objects. ordinary, cheap and disposable objects. Using strategies such as accumulation, repetition and modular ordering, displays formal aspects that usually pass unnoticed, giving them their own voice and a purpose beyond the imposed function by industry and everyday life. In both projects, the artist approaches materials from an animistic perspective. mundane and everyday; and it is proposed to blur the limits between subject and object, the organic and the industrial, art and crafts.
